3 Letter Domain Names - Rarity and Value

Over the last 6 years, the internet and domaining have changed significantly. As many of us have heard, the .com bust of 2000 and 2001 had a lot to do with seemingly unlimited venture capital and unrestrained hope in a new medium of communication: the internet. The fundamentals of the internet really never changed during this bust, but how it was utilized by businesses and users has, and now we are in the midst of a whole new realm of internet growth and expanse.

To this end, the new gold standard in domaining and web addresses are now found in the realm of 3 Letter ( LLL ), 3 Number ( NNN), and 3 Character ( CCC ) domains. First, some basic facts:

There are only 17,576 possible 3 letter domain combinations per extension
There are only 1,000 possible 3 number domain combinations per extension
There are only 46,656 possible 3 character domain combinations per extension

These may seem like large numbers at first, but in correlation to the number of registered domains (50 Million Plus), these numbers really represent a small group of some of the most valuable and rare internet real estate in domaining.

Short 3 Character domains have many qualitys that make them extremely valuable. Firstly, they are very strong for acronym use. Many companies have long titles and names. For example, take IBM. Their full name is International Business Machines. Imagine if you had to type in Internationalbusinessmachines.com each time you wanted to learn more about their company. It's so much simpler just to go to IBM.com. Acronyms are very popular in business and almost every possible 3 Letter combo has multiple acronym possibilities.

Secondly, short domains are easy to remember. If you web address was www.adfsafdasfdas.com, good luck in getting too many folks to remember that one. On the other hand, plenty of people could remember abc.com or znb.org. Shortness equals brand recognition and memorability.

Additionally, short domains are in high demand. Many people type in short domains and they therefore get a great deal of focused and random traffic. As far as the internet is concerned, traffic is king and websites can only share information with those who actually first visit them.

Finally, short domains are very valuable. Among the top extensions of .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, .co.uk, .de, any 3 letter, 3 number or 3 character domain is probably worth something, and in .com, often that value is many thousands into the millions of dollars.

3 character domains are a great place to invest your education on the web and may deserve your attention and investment.
